Database-Driven Web Sites, by Mike Morrison and Joline Morrison, Course Technology, 2000. ISBN 0-619-01556-X. Excellent introductory text, very well organized, with hands-on examples and downloadable files. The focus is on Microsoft technologies, but the concepts apply to all.

Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, by Steve Krug, Que, 2000, ISBN 0789723107. The bible of web page design. Nothing specific about database websites, but anyone building a web site, tiny or huge, absolutely must read this book.

Active Server Pages

ASP In A Nutshell, by A. Keyton Weissinger. OReilly, 1999. Excellent ASP reference book, but not for beginners.

Beginning ASP Databases, by John Kauffman. Wrox Press 1999. ISBN 1-861002-7-26. Excellent for any level, despite the scary-looking guy on the cover. Focus on databases is a plus. Lots of examples, plus a web site

Active Server Pages for Dummies, 2nd Edition, by Bill Hatfield. IDB Books, 1999. ISBN 0-7645-0603-X. Hey, even smart people have some of the Dummies books! Great introduction to ASP in easy-to-understand language. Includes a CD-ROM with ASP samples, software, and more.

Developing ASP Components, by Shelly Powers. O'Reilly. How to write your own COM objects. Excellent technical resource for those that want to go that way.

Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 3.0 in 21 Days, Scott Mitchell Sams, Paperback, Published February 2000, 783 pages, ISBN 0672318636. I haven't seen this one, but the "Teach Yourself..." books are usually pretty good.

Access97 for Dummies - Excellent for a first introduction. Hey, don't be embarassed... you can always get a plain brown cover for it!

An Introduction to Database Systems, by C. J. Date. Classic text on database systems. Technical and a bit dry, but if you're into the academics of the technology, this is the recommended text.

A Guide to the SQL Standard, by C. J. Date and Hugh Darwen - Excellent, small, readable.

Choosing a Database For Yor Web Site, by John Paul Ashenfelter. John Wiley & Sons 1999, ISBN 0-471-29690-2. Good overview of database software and tools for adding database power to a website. A little dated, and I would like to see some examples and exercises, but overall a good book. Also see the author's website at http://www.webdatabase.org.

Database Design for Mere Mortals, by M. J. Hernandez, Addison-Wesley Developer's Press, 1997. ISBN 0-201-69471-9. Very readable and useful book, especially for beginners.

Database Solutions - A Step-By-Step Guide to Building Database, by Connoly & Beggs. Addison Wesley, 2000. ISBN 0-102-67476-9. Excellent introduction to the hows and whys of designing databases.

Oracle8i for Dummies - A good introduction. Again, plain brown wrappers are available.

Oracle SQL*Plus Pocket Reference, O'Reilly, ISBN 1-56592-941-1

Special Edition Using SQL, by Rafe Colburn. Que, 2000, ISBN 0-7897-1974-6. Good introductory text on the SQL language and databases in general. Lots of examples. Clearly written.

SQL Server 7 for Dummies - Good for beginners and even experts.

SQL for Dummies - Don't knock it until you've tried it!

The Practical SQL Handbook, Second Edition, by J. S. Bowman and S. L. Emerson, Addison-Wesley, 1996. Covers standard SQL, and includs many examples. Reportedly very readable and useful.

The Data Warehouse Toolkit, by Ralph Kimball. Wiley 1996. ISBN 0-471-15337-0. With CD-ROM. Classic text on Data Warehousing techniques, by the guy that knows it all. Very technical. Out of print, but worth looking for if this is your bag.

The Data Webhouse Toolkit, by Ralph Kimball & Richard Mert. Wiley, 2000. ISBN 0-471-37680-9. Modernized version of Kimball's classic text. Technical, but probably the best book on the subject.

PHP

Building Database Applications on the Web Using PHP3, by Craig Hilton and Jeff Willis. Addison-Wesley, 2000. ISBN 0-201-65771-6. An excellent introduction to PHP, and how to use it for database applications. There are 8 varied examples which, although short, demonstrate basic important concepts. Good book for newcomers. The last two-thirds of the book is a Reference section that clearly describes each PHP function and gives an example. CDROM included contains PHP, PostgreSQL database and MySQL database software for installation under Red Hat Linux. CDROM does not include the examples - you have to type 'em in yourself, which is good for you anyway.

Core PHP Programming, by Leon Atkinson. Prentice Hall, 1999. ISBN 0-13-020787-X. An excellent book on how to program using PHP in general. Lots of real-world examples, including some that use databases. CDROM included.
